Solventless synthesis of ZIF-L and ZIF-8 with hydraulic press and high temperature

In recent years, alternative methods to conventional synthesis of MOFs (metal-organic frameworks) have emerged due the problematic use solvents for both environment and human health. Here we present ZIFs (zeolitic imidazolate at high pressure by means a hydraulic press provided with heating mechanism. By optimization parameters such as temperature, time addition promotor NH4NO3, considerable increase in reaction yield was achieved products, neither washed nor activated, obtained since first minute reaction. Depending on operation conditions, ZIF-L appeared competing phase ZIF-8. Upon transformation into ZIF-8 presence ethanol, 58.2% highly crystalline BET specific surface area 947 m2/g. This green, fast, versatile improved method suggests possible way future other possibility their industrial implementation.

A new method for the large-scale hydrothermal production and activation of ZIF-8 is presented in this communication. Activated ZIF-8 has been produced, at lab-scale and pilot-scale, at a rate of 27 g h(-1) and 810 g h(-1) respectively with the activated material showing a surface area of 1800 m(2) g(-1).
